This course introduces elementary students to longer forms of writing. It prepares students for essay writing by engaging them in the process of writing various types paragraphs such as expository, persuasive, and narrative. The culminating activity of the course is writing a five paragraph narrative essay.
Lesson 1 – Fact or Opinion, Comparing and Contrasting
By the end of Lesson 1, students will be able to explain the difference between a fact and an opinion, and they will compare and contrast items using facts.
Lesson 2 – Excellent Expository
By the end of the second lesson, students will be able to write an expository paragraph.
Lesson 3 – Persuasive Paragraph
By the end of Lesson 3, students will be able to write a persuasive paragraph.
Lesson 4 – Verb Tense
By the end of the fourth lesson, students will be able to identify and write verbs in their proper tenses. Students will also write using stronger, more specific verbs.
Lesson 5 – Adverbs
By the end of the fifth lesson, students will be able to identify and use adverbs in sentences and paragraphs.
Lesson 6 – Setting, Character, and Plot
By the end of Lesson 6, students will be able identify setting, character, and plot in a narrative.
Lesson 7 – The Narrative Essay
By the end of Lesson 7, students will be able write a narrative essay.
Lesson 8 – Put It All Together
By the end of the eighth lesson, students will write a five paragraph essay.
