Middle School Writing Basics 2

This eight-week course is the second of two courses focusing on “boosting the basics” at the middle school level. Middle School Writing Enhancement emphasizes the technical parts of writing such as comma and semi-colon placement, compound sentences, words often confused, and capitalization. These are the areas where many good, young writers who have creative talent often need reinforcement.

Week 1 – Sensible Sentences

By the end of the first week, the student will be able to create a complete sentence. The student will also be able to identify and create declarative and interrogative sentences.

Week 2 – Commands and Exclamations – Two more kinds of sentences

By the end of the second week, the student will be able to write exclamatory and imperative sentences using the correct punctuation.

Week 3 – Verbs – Past, Present, and Future

By the end of the third week, the student will be able to identify and write using the correct present, past, and future verb forms.

Week 4 – More Verb Forms!

By the end of the fourth week, the student will be able to write verbs in their progressive and perfect forms and will be able to edit sentences for tense problems.

Week 5 – Describing Words

By the end of the fifth week, the student will be able to write sentences using adjectives and adverbs properly.

Week 6 – Putting Sentences Together

By the end of the sixth week, the student will be able to create compound sentences using conjunctions and commas and/or semi-colons.

Week 7 – Comma Sense

By the end of week 7, students will be able to use commas in a series, to set off, and in direct address.

Week 8 – The Proof is in the Writing

By the end of the eighth week, the student will be able to correctly edit for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation errors.
